Caitlin, can you tell us more about the Peace Corp? What is the main reason we should help the kids in Guatamala? What are the needs of the kids , because we're ready to help the kids in need.:)
Hola Daniel! I'm so excited about working with you and your school on the Pearly Whites Project! This blog is a great idea and I can't wait to share some of my experiences here in Guatemala with everyone back at Lincoln Elementary. Thank you to everyone who is participating in such a great cause!
Now let me tell you a little bit about the Peace Corps. The Corps was founded in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy. Over the past 50 years, over 200,000 volunteers have served in 139 countries all over the world. Each volunteer lives in a foreign country for 27 months. It is a great way to get to know people from other parts of the world and help those who need it.
I arrived in Guatemala on January 5th, 2011. I have lived in Nebaj, Guatemala for a year and I have gotten to meet a lot of wonderful kids who are the same age as you guys over there at Lincoln Elementary. Life here is different than in the United States. There are a lot of children who don't get to go to school and get a good education. Some of the kids have to work so their families can afford to buy food. They sell newspapers, shine shoes in the park, work at grocery stores and even sell food on the street. I work in the schools and help teach the kids the importance of staying healthy. We practice brushing our teeth, washing our hands, eating a healthy snack, cleaning our fingernails, brushing our hair, etc. Sometimes it is difficult for the kids to do these things because they cannot afford to buy toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap or hairbrushes.
The Pearly Whites Project is going to help so many kids in my town. Toothbrushes and toothpaste are two things that are necessary for having healthy, clean teeth. I am excited about teaching my students how and why it is important to brush their teeth. I think all of you guys at Lincoln Elementary will get to learn a lot about Guatemala and the kids here while we are working together.
I hope I answered your questions. I am looking forward to your next post! Now here are some questions for you and the kids back home at Lincoln Elementary. Why do you think it is important to help kids that you haven’t even met? What things do you think you have in common with the kids here in Guatemala? What language do they speak in Guatemala?
Hola Caitlin, Como Estas. I also speak spanish and I can understand you.:) Now that you've helped, it's time for the kids at Lincoln Elementary to help. During the past month LES has collected toothbrushes and toothpaste. Once we finish collecting on April 27, Mrs.Martin will send you all we've collected.
Now I would like to ask all the kids in Lincoln Elementary, why do you think it's important to help the kids over at Guatamala even though you haven't even met them?
It's important to help kids in Guatemala because you never know what might happen to them. Someday you might meet somebody in Guatemala and when you get there and see what the place looks like, you might realize they needed your help. Hana
I think that speaking to children from another country is very important because when you go to were you r going and the child says something you are not going to know what there talking about so it will be weird and crazy because im a italy and some people dont know what im talking about
